How to Prevent Corns and Calluses - Advice from a Foot Care Nurse
Hi, It’s Becky! I see a lot of clients who struggle with corns and calluses. These thickened areas of skin may seem minor at first, but they can become painful and even lead to complications if not cared for properly—especially for people with diabetes, circulation issues, or those who are on their feet all day.
The good news? Corns and calluses are often preventable with a few simple habits. In this post, I’m sharing expert tips straight from the treatment room to help you keep your feet healthy, smooth, and pain-free.
1. Choose the Right Shoes
Ill-fitting footwear is the most common cause of corns and calluses. Tight shoes create pressure points, while loose shoes allow your feet to slide and rub.
Nurse’s tip:
Go shoe shopping later in the day when your feet are naturally a bit swollen, and always try on both shoes. Look for a wide toe box and cushioned soles. Avoid heels and pointy shoes for daily wear.
2. Add Protective Padding
If you’re prone to pressure or friction in certain spots, cushion those areas proactively.
Try:
Gel inserts or orthotics
Corn pads or toe protectors
Moleskin for rubbing areas
At Becky’s Foot Care, I often help clients find the right padding solution for their foot shape and footwear. It can make a world of difference!
3. Keep Feet Moisturized
Dry, cracked skin increases friction. A good moisturizing routine can keep calluses at bay and maintain soft, healthy feet.
Routine:
Wash your feet daily and dry thoroughly.
Apply a quality foot cream—especially one with urea or lactic acid for gentle exfoliation.
Moisturize before bed and wear cotton socks overnight for an added hydration boost.

4. Exfoliate Smartly
Regular, gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin before it builds up into painful calluses.
Do:
Use a pumice stone or foot file after bathing.
File gently—no aggressive scraping.
Follow with moisturizer.
I also offer professional foot exfoliation treatments if you prefer expert care or need a bit of extra help.
5. Don’t Skip Socks
Socks provide a buffer that helps reduce friction and absorb moisture.
Opt for:
Seamless socks (especially helpful for toe corns)
Moisture-wicking materials to keep feet dry
Thick socks with built-in padding for high-impact activities
6. Mind Your Movement
Standing for long hours or doing repetitive motions like walking or running can contribute to pressure points.
Prevention tips:
Use supportive footwear and insoles.
Rest and elevate your feet when possible.
Alternate shoes throughout the week.
7. Get Professional Foot Care
Sometimes, home care just isn’t enough—especially if you have chronic issues, underlying conditions, or recurring pain.
