Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What Training and Experience Do You Have As a Foot Care Nurse?
I'm a Registered Nurse (RN) with advanced training in foot health. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Laurentian University and completed my Advanced Diabetic Foot Care Certification at Algonquin College.
For the past 10 years, I’ve provided medical-grade foot care to clients of all ages, with a special focus on those managing diabetes, circulation concerns, or mobility challenges. My services include nail trimming, callus and corn reduction, and comprehensive foot assessments—all delivered with compassion, precision, and the highest standards of safety.
My goal is simple: to help you stay comfortable, confident, and one step ahead in your foot health.
2. Foot Care by a Nurse vs. a Pedicure: What’s the Difference?
While both leave your feet feeling better, nursing foot care and a pedicure are very different services:
👩⚕️ Foot Care by a Nurse
Provided by a licensed nurse with medical training
Focuses on health, prevention, and treatment
Helps with issues like thick nails, corns, calluses, fungal nails, cracked heels, and ingrown nails
Follows strict infection control standards
Ideal for people with diabetes, circulation issues, or immune conditions
💅 Pedicure at a Salon
A cosmetic service focused on appearance
Includes soaking, scrubbing, polish, and massage
Not trained to treat medical foot conditions
Tools may not meet medical sterilization standards
Not always safe for high-risk feet (like those with diabetes)
3. What Happens During a Medical Foot Care Appointment?
At Becky’s Foot Care, your comfort and safety come first! Here's what you can expect during your visit:
🦶 Assessment
We start by checking your feet for any concerns—like thick nails, calluses, corns, cracks, or signs of infection. I also check skin condition, circulation, and any areas of pain or pressure.
🧼 Gentle Cleaning
Your feet are cleaned using alcohol (no soaking needed!) to reduce bacteria and prep the skin.
🧰 Nail & Skin Care
I carefully trim and file toenails—even thick or hard-to-cut ones—and reduce corns, calluses, and dry or cracked skin using medical tools.
💬 Education & Advice
I’ll let you know what I’m seeing and share tips to help you care for your feet at home. If needed, I may recommend products or refer you to your doctor.
🧴 Finishing Touches
I apply a moisturizer and make sure your feet feel comfortable, clean, and cared for.
4. Why Don’t You Soak Feet During Foot Care?
You might be surprised to learn that soaking isn’t part of professional medical foot care — and that’s on purpose! Soaking can make the skin too soft, which increases the risk of cuts, tears, or infection, especially for those with diabetes or sensitive skin.
Instead, I use safe, dry techniques that follow modern best practices. Your feet are gently cleaned, assessed, and cared for without soaking — keeping your skin healthy and reducing the risk of complications.
Have questions? I’m always happy to explain more at your visit!
5. How Do You Treat Ingrown Toenails?
I treat ingrown toenails by carefully trimming out the offending edge to relieve pressure and prevent further irritation. I will also provide education on ingrown nail prevention and at home maintenance. If needed, I can also apply an Onyfix brace, a painless, non-invasive solution that helps guide the nail into a natural, healthy growth pattern over time. This method is ideal for clients who want to avoid more invasive procedures.
6. How Often Should I Book a Foot Care Appointment?
Most clients benefit from a visit every 4-6 weeks, but it depends on your needs. I will offer a suggested follow up for you at the end of our visit.
7. Do You Treat Fungal Nails or Infections?
Yes, I provide safe, professional care for fungal nails, thickened nails, and other common foot conditions.
While I do not prescribe medication, I can assess the issue, provide treatment to manage symptoms, and recommend over-the-counter options or next steps. If needed, I’ll guide you to follow up with your physician for a formal diagnosis or prescription.
My goal is to support your foot health with expert, compassionate care—no referral needed to get started!
7. Is Your Equipment Sterilized?
Absolutely! At Becky’s Foot Care, I take your health seriously. That’s why I follow the highest level of sterilization protocols—the same standards used in dental offices and hospital operating rooms.
🧼 All instruments are 100% disinfected using an autoclave, which kills all bacteria, viruses, and spores.
📋 I strictly follow Public Health Ontario’s IPAC Checklist for reprocessing medical equipment.
🕒 I maintain detailed records of every sterilization cycle and stay up to date with the latest infection prevention guidelines.
When you visit, you can trust that your foot care is not only effective—but also safe, clean, and professionally managed.
8. Do You Offer Mobile Services?
Yes! I offer in-home foot care for clients who have difficulty getting to the clinic. This is a great option for:
✔️ Seniors
✔️ Those with mobility challenges
✔️ People recovering from surgery or illness
I currently travel to clients in Ottawa’s East and South ends—but if you're unsure if you're in the area, just ask! I’m happy to let you know if I can come to your neighbourhood.
9. How Much Does It Cost? And Do You Accept Insurance?
🏠 In-Home Visits: $80-$100
🏥 Clinic Visits: $50–$90 per visit (based on treatment needs)
Many extended health benefits and insurance plans cover foot care provided by a Registered Nurse (RN). I’ll provide a detailed receipt for reimbursement, but I always recommend checking with your provider in advance to confirm what’s required.
📌 Note for Canada Life clients: A doctor’s note is typically required for home visits in order for your claim to be accepted.
🎖️ Veterans Affairs (VAC): I can direct bill to Veterans Affairs Canada for those with a valid K Number.
If you have any questions about coverage, I’m happy to help guide you!
