About the Advanced Foot Care Nurse Course

The AFCN Learning Institute program combines:

  • Online Foot Care Theory – Approximately 100 hours of self-paced lessons covering anatomy, infection control, foot and nail disorders, diabetic foot care, and treatment protocols.

  • In-Person Clinical Placement in Ottawa – Three days of supervised, hands-on training with real clients in a variety of settings.

Hands-On Clinical Days

Our program includes 3 days of supervised clinical learning designed to give you the skills and confidence to provide safe, professional foot care.

Day 1 – Observation & Orientation

  • Shadow an experienced RN as they provide real client care in both clinic and/or home visit settings

  • Observe charting, billing, and client communication in practice

  • Review essential tools and equipment used in advanced foot care

  • Learn the autoclave process and how to reprocess critical instruments according to Public Health guidelines

Day 2 – Mixed Learning

  • A balance of shadowing and hands-on practice

  • Begin working directly with clients under RN supervision

  • Continue observing a variety of cases in both clinic and home visit settings

  • Practice infection control, tool handling, and treatment techniques with guidance

Day 3 – Full Hands-On

  • Provide complete client care from assessment to treatment under supervision

  • Gain confidence in performing full treatments independently in a supportive environment

  • Refine charting, documentation, and client education skills
